2016 Favorites

2016 may have been an awful year for most when it came to politics and celebrity culture, but all things considered, it had its perks in the areas of fashion and entertainment. It also marked significant milestones for me, personally — getting published on The Huffington Post, turning 18 years old, officially becoming a senior in high school, beginning the process of applying to colleges, getting accepted to one of my top choice universities, and essentially, growing up. It was the year that I truly began to come into myself — making life-changing decisions about my future and considering all the possibilities that lay ahead. And so here’s to the struggles and accomplishments, and the unforeseen future.

Every year brings with it new trends, some of which are here to stay, and some of which fade with time. And then there’s those that remain evergreen…

My ultimate favorite fashion bloggers in 2016 were two very talented Muslim women who combined the latest trends by layering their outfits in the most beautiful ways. Their looks are truly inspiring, and go to show how modesty never compromises expressing yourself. On a side note, I need their entire wardrobe asap.

Among western trends were high-waisted flared trousers, pleated skirts, knee-length boots, cold-shoulder tops, large trenchcoats worn across the shoulders, knitted scarves, velvet boots, and of course, choker necklaces.

Tahereh Mafi, author of the New York Times bestselling Shatter Me series has always been one of my absolute favorite fashion icons. She, too, is a hijabi who brings a whole other meaning to the turban style — with her wildly colorful outfits and strange but unique combinations, she manages to make every outfit look like a masterpiece.

Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, two of the highest-paid actresses in Bollywood, are also known for making their mark in the fashion industry. Wearing popular designs by Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra, their looks are elegant and refined, cultured and sophisticated.

I, for one, am thrilled for what 2017 will bring to the fashion industry — not just in the West, but around the world.

  1. Omg, congrats on getting into one of your top universities! If you don’t mind my asking, what you going to major in? And which college is it? (I know I sound nosy, sorry about that, but I can’t help but get excited whenever someone mentions academics) 😊 Once again, congrats!
